The encyclopedic dictionary is a reprint reproduction of the edition of Brockhaus and Efron 1890 Reprint taken to the 100 anniversary from the day of this largest encyclopedia. The names of the scientists who participated in the compilation of "encyclopedia", the quality and thoroughness of the scientific articles included in it, allow us to call this edition one of the greatest monuments of Russian book publishing. In 1889 the owner of one of the Petersburg printers I. A. Efron signed a contract with the German publisher "F. A. Brockhaus" in translation into Russian language of a large encyclopedic dictionary of the publisher. However, since the chief editor of the encyclopedia, famous Petersburg Professor I. E. Andreevsky, became in addition a bill of material to include in the publication and the original Russian article.
Starting from the ninth polytoma (encyclopedia came out in two versions: the "expensive" (41 volume) and "cheap" (82 polytoma), manual preparation of the edition moved to another Petersburg Professor K. K. Arseniev. From this moment radically changes the approach to the compilation of the encyclopedia: the conversion material goes by the wayside, it becomes much more factual and statistical material. Special attention is paid to geographical articles, the editorial States: "the Russian city fit absolutely everything, with the addition of towns, villages and hamlets with more than 3 thousand inhabitants or for some reason deserve attention". Changes and editorial staff of sections of the encyclopedia, the work involved leading Russian scientists.
Of course, some articles are "Encyclopedic dictionary Brockhaus and Efron" has now lost its value, the science behind a hundred years has gone far ahead, however, the historical value of most of the articles over the past hundred years has only grown. Hardly another publication, as fully embodying the concept of the world and of themselves, characteristic of that age, for example, the article "Russia" is... two polytoma.
And one more feature distinguishes this encyclopedia from all, without exception, modern publications of this kind: it can be easy to read, and reading it will be a fascinating useful for anyone interested in the history of science and technology, history of arts and culture, history of countries and peoples.
