Two hundred thousand words and thirty thousand proverbs as an encyclopedia of Russian life
Russian Russian Dictionary by V.I. Dahl is the national pride of Russia, a true masterpiece of Russian literature. There are about 200 thousand words and at least 30 thousand proverbs and sayings. Here is a unique, fully illustrated modern edition of this one-of-a-kind monument of Russian dictionary science. Numerous illustrations - images of national history, the rich subject world of our people's culture - make this dictionary a true encyclopedia of Russian life.
"...The compiler of a dictionary is not a pointer to the language, but a servant, his slave; the same can be said of any writer: you write with a pen, you will not cut down with an axe. How many speeches could be collected, devoting all their leisure time to collecting and processing Russian words, so many were entered into the dictionary, and not a single one was intentionally missed... You can't joke with language: a person's verbal speech is a visible, tactile connection between soul and body, spirit and flesh..."
