Euclid. BEGINNINGS in 2 volumes. Gift books bound in leather.

Euclid or Euclid is an ancient Greek mathematician, geometer, author of the first extant theoretical treatises on mathematics. Biographical information about Euclid is extremely scarce. The only reliable thing is that his scientific activity took place in Alexandria in the III century BC.

Euclid. BEGINNINGS

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Euclid's "Principles" for mathematics. Written around the third century BC, the work of an ancient Greek mathematician for its more than two thousand years of existence has not lost its significance and interest both for historians of mathematics and for mathematicians working on modern problems.

The translation of "Beginnings" from Greek presented in this publication was made by the famous Russian mathematician, historian of science, methodologist and teacher D. D. Mordukhai-Boltovsky (1876-1952) and is considered by many researchers to be the most accurate of the existing translations into Russian. This is the latest complete academic edition of Euclid's work, provided with detailed comments by the translator. In addition to the 13 books of the "Beginnings", undoubtedly written by Euclid, it contains 2 books (XIV and XV) written by other authors, but the authorship of which was attributed to Euclid until the XVI century.

A separate book includes detailed comments by D. D. Mordukhai-Boltovsky on the "Beginnings", the purpose of which is to facilitate the reader's understanding of the text and provide the necessary historical and mathematical information.

The second volume contains comments on the work of Euclid's "Beginnings". The translation of the "Beginnings" of the famous Russian mathematician, historian of science, methodologist and teacher D. D. Mordukhai-Boltovsky (1876-1952) is considered by many researchers to be the most accurate Russian translation of the work of an ancient Greek mathematician that exists today. The translator's comments collected in this publication are provided with a large number of references to the specialized literature used by the author of the translation, which may be useful to specialists. The comments will help the modern reader to better understand the mathematical content of the "Principles" and the continuity of their provisions, their historical connection with modern mathematical science.
