Johann Wolfgang Goethe is a German writer, thinker, philosopher and naturalist, statesman. Goethe worked in various genres: poetry, drama, epic, autobiography, epistolary, etc. Goethe became the main ideologue of the "Storm and Onslaught" movement.
"Faust" - The great Goethe conceived his "Faust" when he was a little over twenty years old, and completed the tragedy a few months before his death. This work was the result of the philosophical and artistic searches of the author - poet, playwright, novelist, the greatest scientist of his time, a man of encyclopedic knowledge. The hero of the tragedy, Dr. Johann Faust, lived in the first half of the XVI century and was reputed to be a magician and a warlock who, rejecting modern science and religion, sold his soul to the devil. There were oral legends about Faust, he was the hero of theatrical performances, his image was addressed by the authors - G. R. Widman, K. Marlowe, F. M. Klinger, G. E. Lessing and others. Under Goethe's pen, the story of Faust, dedicated to the eternal themes of the knowledge of life and the difficulties of the human path, has become one of the peaks of world literature.
