The new philosophical encyclopedia gives an overview of world philosophy in all the richness of its basic concepts, works, historical traditions, schools, names, summarizes the achievements of Russian and foreign philosophical research over the last decade, is the most complete in the literature vault of philosophical knowledge at the turn of the Millennium. The encyclopedia contains about five thousand articles, authored more than four hundred famous scientists — specialists in various fields of philosophy.
In preparing this edition to make some corrections and additions. In particular, the first volume contains an article dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Institute of philosophy in the fourth - author index for all volumes.

The purpose of the encyclopedia is to give an appropriate contemporary level of science a generalized notion of world philosophy in all the richness of its basic concepts, works, historical traditions, schools and names. Foreign and domestic experience of philosophical dictionaries and encyclopedias is varied – aimed at different social layers and implements a variety of strategies.

Thematically the articles are divided into the following groups:
– personalities, which covers mainly professional philosophers and is complemented by a limited number of philosophical scholars, writers;
– philosophical trends, schools and doctrines;
– concepts and terms, significant for the whole of the history of philosophy and for certain directions and individual thinkers;
– philosophical works, the choice of which is determined by their importance for the history of philosophy or a particular philosophical movement.
