The heroine of Lewis Carroll's world-famous fairy tale was rightly perplexed and even slightly indignant: "What's the use of a book if there are no pictures or conversations in it?" Let this be the reasoning of a child, but adults are not completely indifferent to pictures and conversations either…

There are plenty of conversations in Mikhail Zoshchenko's stories. It seems that the street itself speaks from the pages of his books, the "hundred-empty crowd" is chattering. Zoshchenko gives the floor to the layman. Residents of communal apartments and bureaucrats, aspiring poets and inveterate swindlers ("arapisty" men), artisans and housewives, frivolous wives of state employees and "widows by origin", workers and peasants, "specialists" and "social workers" chatter, interrupting each other.

And as "pictures" the book is decorated with rare autolithographs made by the recognized master of book graphics Evgeny Kibrik for the anniversary edition of the works of M. Zoshchenko "Dear Citizens" (1940). It was this collection that served as the basis of this publication. His text is complemented by other stories that have earned the well-deserved fame of "a cheerful writer with sad eyes."
