Absolute power and a dictator's solitude in an unnamed Latin American country
In the novel "Autumn of the Patriarch", Gabriel Garcia Marquez considers not so much a specific fate, but the idea of power embodied in it. It cannot be said that the tyrant really lives, but he cannot die either. His name is already surrounded by legends, they are looking for a replacement for him from the very first days.
"I have always wanted to write a book about absolute power" - this is how the author defined the main theme of his work.
The dictator of an unnamed Latin American country has been in power for so long that he no longer remembers how he came to it. He is a man, a living myth, a puppeteer, and a puppet in the hands of Fate. He is completely alone in his huge palace, where the real and the unreal coexist in the most bizarre way. He wants and fears death. But... is there a death for the embodiment of the legend? Perhaps the ruler will be happy only when he dies and realizes that for him "the countless time of eternity has finally ended"?
