Jonathan Swift – The Adventures of Lemuel Gulliver: First a Surgeon, and then the Captain of Several Ships.
An exclusive gift book in a leather binding.
“The Adventures of Lemuel Gulliver” is a classic satirical novel that tells the story of the travels of the ship’s doctor Lemuel Gulliver to amazing fictional lands. The hero finds himself among tiny Lilliputians, giants in Brobdingnag, on the flying island of the Laputans, and in a rational state of talking horses — the Houyhnhnms. Through the lens of these fantastic adventures, Jonathan Swift wittily satirizes human vices, the structure of government, the imperfections of society, and the foolishness of the science of his time.
In this part, Lemuel Gulliver suffers a shipwreck and finds himself in a land of tiny people who are 12 times smaller than he is. At first, the Lilliputians capture the giant, but then they take him into service, grant him the title of “nardac,” and use him in the war against the neighboring state of Blefuscu. Through his descriptions of the laws, absurd court customs, and wars of Lilliput (for example, over which end to break boiled eggs from), Swift bitingly satirizes the political system of England, religious disputes, and the insignificance of human vanity.
