Modest Bogdanovich – The History of the Patriotic War of 1812. A gift book in a leather binding.

The fundamental work “The History of the Patriotic War of 1812”, written by the outstanding military historian and lieutenant general Modest Bogdanovich, is recognized as one of the most accurate and detailed chronicles of the conflict with Napoleon. The work was created by order of the Emperor, which gave the author access to classified archival documents of the War Ministry and the General Staff. The book covers not only the chronicle of military operations in 1812 but also the prehistory of the conflict, including the preparation and deployment of forces on both sides. Bogdanovich appears here as a profound military analyst, meticulously examining the composition of the troops, strategic plans, and tactical features of each key battle. The pages of this large‑scale study provide a detailed account of the phenomenon of the people’s and partisan war, which brought fame to the names of ordinary heroes. The historian strove for maximum impartiality, assessing the maneuvers of both the Russian army and the French troops with equal objectivity. Bogdanovich’s text is distinguished by its remarkable factual accuracy, which is why Leo Tolstoy actively used its materials while working on the novel *War and Peace*. This monumental three‑volume work clearly demonstrates how colossal sacrifices and the unbending will of the people led to a triumphant victory over a formidable enemy. To this day, the monograph remains an invaluable primary source for all researchers of the era of the Napoleonic Wars.
