John Robert Fowles is an English novelist, novelist, and essayist. One of the outstanding representatives of postmodernism in literature.


"Mantissa" is a novel about a writer, about the process of birth of a literary work. The initial amnesia in an empty hospital room is an allegory of the nothingness from which the design is born, and copulation becomes the starting point for the "conception" and "birth" of the novel. In the course of the work, Fowles ' characters discuss various philosophical issues, such as the author's place and role, or his relationship to the text. This gave the writer David Lodge base called the "Mantissa" by metaraminol.

At the end of the novel, Fowles gives a definition from the Oxford dictionary: mantissa — " an addition of comparatively little importance, especially to a literary text or argument."
