A century of Glupov through grotesque, funny, and frightening mayors
"The History of a City" is one of the most famous works of the remarkable Russian satirist writer M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889). The novel tells the story of the fictional city of Glupov for almost a hundred years. Turning to fiction and the grotesque, Saltykov-Shchedrin described the morals and life of the "stupid people" and created a whole gallery of successive Stupid mayors, behind whose funny and sometimes scary images the rulers of the Russian state, its past and present are guessed. The publication is provided with an article by E. N. Gracheva, as well as detailed comments.
