Fear and betrayal confronted by the human soul's strength in war
"Stories"
Vasil Bykov is a writer with a dramatic literary destiny. Ruthless criticism and censorship, with all-Union fame and millions of copies - in order to withstand these two extremes, you need to have strength and courage. Bykov had plenty of them: a combatant, wounded three times, he found his way by choosing a military theme, calling it "the most worthy of all I have experienced in my life" and dedicating his best prose to it. The undisguised, unrefined truth of war, where fear and betrayal meet with the strength and beauty of the soul, the variability of human feelings, true depth and realism are the distinctive features of the novels of the writer, rightfully recognized as one of the classics of literature of the last century.
The collection is illustrated by the works of George Poplavsky, who created imaginative, poignant and honest pictures of the war.
