Gabriele D'annunzio was one of the brightest stars in Europe. His contemporaries called him Il Poeta, like Dante, though he preferred the Comandante's address. An avid adventurer and philanderer, D'annunzio personally compiled a detailed file of his love victories. Sex, death, and beauty were the main themes of his life-making. It seems that he lived his books at first with extraordinary intensity, and then wrote them down. The novel "the Innocent" (1892), offered to the reader, formed the basis of the famous film by Luchino Visconti. D'annunzio in this novel presents a man as a hostage to the game of unmanageable forces, a fatal obsession. At the same time, there is a sense of pain for the suppressed humanity, the measure of which - following Dostoevsky - D'annunzio makes a child's suffering. The hero-a young aristocrat Tullio constantly cheats on his wife Julianna. She desperately accepts the friendship and help of the young writer Philippe Arborio. But the husband, out of jealousy, returns his wife's favor again. However, it is discovered that Julianna is pregnant...
