An ethnographic encyclopedia of Russian folk thought and life
V. I. Dal is known to the modern reader as an outstanding Russian lexicographer, the author of the"Explanatory Dictionary of the living Great Russian language". But, in addition to the dictionary, V. I. Dal collected and published in 1862 "Proverbs of the Russian People" - a collection that included more than 30 thousand units - proverbs, sayings, sentences, tongue twisters, sayings and jokes, riddles.
The proverbs and sayings reflect the realities of Russian folk life, beliefs and omens, folk beliefs, ideas about the surrounding world. The collection of proverbs by V. I. Dahl can be considered an ethnographic encyclopedia of Russian folk thought.
This book contains selected proverbs and sayings from the collection of Vladimir Ivanovich Dal (1801-1872), a writer and ethnographer, the creator of the world-famous "Explanatory Dictionary of the living Great Russian language".
