"Germanic mythology" is a fundamental study of the historical worldview of the continental Germans and belongs to the pen of Jacob Grimm (1785-1863), one of the greatest linguists of the XIX century, the eldest of the brothers Grimm. The book has had a comprehensive impact on a whole generation of scientists and has become a source of inspiration for philologists and ethnographers around the world (including Russian scientists). Together with "Germanic mythology", a new methodological school was established in folklore, working with myth as a living part of the language, the core of an enduring folk tradition. In many ways, Grimm's work remains an unsurpassed benchmark: in particular, it is the most comprehensive source work on the subject.
This edition presents the first translation of the German mythology into Russian; the translation is based on the most complete, fourth, edition of the book (completed in 1878) without cuts and abbreviations. The translation solves the main difficulties faced by the modern reader.
