Sergei Uvarov – Orthodoxy. Autocracy. Nationality. A gift book in a leather binding.
The collection of theoretical and programmatic works by the outstanding statesman Count Sergei Uvarov, “Orthodoxy. Autocracy. Nationality”, is devoted to the justification of the fundamental ideological doctrine of the Russian Empire during the reign of Nicholas I. The publication is based on ministerial reports, official documents, notes, and letters from the author addressed to Emperor Nicholas I. The main objective of the publications was to create a powerful spiritual and political foundation capable of protecting Russian society and the student body from the destructive influence of European revolutionary ideas. The key element of the book is the famous “Uvarov triad,” which the author proclaimed as the main palladium and the guarantee of the country’s historical prosperity. The thinker consistently reveals the significance of Orthodoxy as the foundation of national morality and of autocracy as the only possible and salvific form of government for Russia. The third element, national identity, is interpreted by Uvarov as the preservation of unique national traditions, loyalty to the throne, and a truly Russian spirit.
The texts devote considerable attention to the reform of national education, which, in the minister’s opinion, must develop in parallel with the strengthening of conservative principles. In the book, the author appears not just as a strict, protective official, but as a deeply educated intellectual who sought to reconcile European science with traditional values. The work allows the reader to study in detail the genesis of the “theory of official nationality” from the primary source, free from later Soviet ideological distortions. Today, this publication is recognized as the most important historical monument of 19th‑century Russian conservative thought.
