Biblical myths reimagined through the destinies of Jesus and Cain

Jose Saramago - The Gospel of Jesus. Cain. A leather-bound gift book.

"The Gospel of Jesus" is a scandalous novel of the 20th century, criticized by the church. A year after the publication of this book, Jose Saramago received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Saramago's novels are full of metaphors. Through them, you can know yourself, just like through tarot cards. The author rethinks the gospel story and tells his version of what happened. The reader becomes an invisible witness to the beginning of the married life of Mary and Joseph. The characters are young and do not suspect that soon a beggar will appear on their doorstep, who will announce Maria's pregnancy and leave behind a cup of glowing earth. That Joseph would be responsible for the deaths of the Bethlehem babies, and this guilt would weigh heavily on the shoulders of his firstborn. That Mary would be left alone with nine children, and Jesus would inherit only sandals from his father. And, of course, no one would have thought that God and the Devil would be in the same boat to reveal his purpose to Jesus of Nazareth.…

"Cain" is Saramago's latest novel, which caused a scandal and accused the writer of audaciously reshaping the Bible. He made the fratricide Cain his main character. Why did he, the villain hated by all, who committed one of the most terrible crimes in the history of mankind, receive Saramago's attention? What attracted him? Is it the strength of character? Or by being rejected and persecuted? The great Portuguese destroys the usual myths and instead offers readers new myths that fascinate with their greatness and at the same time conquer with their simplicity.
