Chekhov's short stories and novellas, written and published from 1892 to 1903, are not at all similar to the early work of Antosha Chekhov. In 1890, Chekhov went to the convict Sakhalin. All the creativity of the "post-Sakhalin" time somehow bears a shade of what was experienced there. Many heroes of the late Chekhov perceive their existence as a prison sentence, strive to escape from it, but nowhere do they find the desired freedom. Nevertheless, in his mature work, Chekhov is not devoid of faith in the best and devotes many of his stories to love.

The satirical artists Kukryniksy (a creative group that included Mikhail Kupriyanov, Porfiry Krylov, Nikolai Sokolov), following the author, change the mood of the drawings - from satirical gloom to sensual lyricism.
