War as God's punishment amid the realities of soldier's life
"Cursed and Killed" is an epic novel that has become one of the most powerful and poignant examples of Russian "military" prose.
The uniqueness of this work lies in its name. It came from the writings of the Russian Old Believers, who believed that all those who sow confusion, war and fratricide on earth would be cursed and killed by God. This gives the epic novel a special flavor and depth.
In "The Damned and the Slain," the author raises important topics such as war as God's punishment sent to the people for the horrors of the revolution and the rejection of faith. The novel also shows extreme realism in the descriptions of soldier's life, as well as surprisingly sincere and popular patriotism, combined with an equally deep and popular rejection of "Sovietism."
Work on this work lasted from 1990 to 1994, and the author never wrote the planned last, third book. However, this did not prevent the novel from becoming one of the most powerful and poignant examples of Russian "military" prose.
