The History of Austrian Literature of the 20th Century in 2 Volumes. Gift books in handmade leather binding.

“The History of Austrian Literature of the 20th Century” in two volumes is a fundamental academic work prepared by the A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which, for the first time in Russian literary studies, provides a detailed examination of Austrian literature as a fully independent phenomenon, rather than merely a part of the broader German culture.
The two‑volume work covers the complex and dramatic path of the development of Austrian literature against the backdrop of global geopolitical catastrophes: from the era of the decline of the Habsburg monarchy to the entry into the new millennium.

Contents:
Volume 1.
The late 19th — mid‑20th century (2009). The book is devoted to the period of the emergence of the most brilliant Austrian modernism (the “Young Vienna” group), the tragic experience of the First World War, the era of the interwar crisis, and the reflection on the catastrophe of Nazism and the Second World War. The focus of the researchers’ attention is the aesthetic quests and masterpieces of such authors as Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Kafka, Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth, Robert Musil, Franz Werfel, and Hermann Broch.
Volume 2.
1945–2000 (2010). This volume provides a detailed analysis of the post‑war revival and modernization of Austrian literature in the context of the new European reality. The authors analyze the works of prominent writers of the second half of the century — from the psychological lyricism of Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan to the radical post‑war neo‑avant‑garde movements, including the “Vienna Group,” the dramaturgy of Thomas Bernhard, Peter Handke, and Elfriede Jelinek, and the magical realism of Christoph Ransmayr.
