Kiaran Carson – Shamrock Tea. A gift book in a leather binding.

“Shamrock Tea” is a whimsical, intellectual, and multi‑layered narrative that teeters on the edge of magical realism. The plot revolves around three gifted teenagers who discover the existence of a mysterious herbal brew. This mystical drink sharpens perception, allowing them to see the world with incredible colour clarity and literally travel through space and time. The main portal for their incredible mental journeys becomes the famous painting by Jan van Eyck, “The Arnolfini Portrait.” As they penetrate inside the canvas, the characters set off for medieval Bruges to find the lost secret of the potion and save the world from spiritual blindness. However, the linear story here constantly dissolves into countless authorial digressions, puzzles, and associations.
The book’s text is woven from medieval color symbolism, the lives of Catholic saints, alchemy, and a detailed history of Ireland and Flanders. On the pages of the novel, real historical figures, such as the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the writers Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde, unexpectedly become part of a single secret organization. The main leitmotif of the work is the idea that everything in the world is inextricably linked to everything else, and reality itself is an endless interweaving of stories. As a result, the author creates a vivid, colorful, and profound fairy tale for adults that requires the reader’s maximum engagement.
