William Somerset Maugham — British writer, one of the most successful writers of the 1930-ies, the author of 78 books, a British intelligence agent.

Somerset Maugham has created 25 plays, 21 novel and more than 100 short stories, however, none of the literary genre he was not an innovator. His famous comedies, such as the Circle (The Circle, 1921), Faithful wife (The Constant Wife, 1927), did not depart from the canons of English "well-made play". In prose, whether a large or small shape, he sought to provide a plot and strongly disapproved of sociological or any other focus of the novel.
