"Languages of the world" — a fundamental multi-volume encyclopedia, produced by the Institute of linguistics, RAS (Moscow) and contain a scientific description of languages. In its framework for 2013 in the Moscow publishing house "Science", "Indrik" and "Academia" was released 17 volumes. 10 more volumes forthcoming. The publication "languages of the world" founded by Victoria Nikolaevna the Yartsevo (1906-1999).
Articles each volume is written in accordance with the uniform typologically oriented scheme, which is used throughout the publication. Articles include General socio-linguistic characteristics of the languages, information about dialects, writing system and history of languages, internal structural description of the phonetics, grammar and vocabulary, as well as basic literature. Scheme articles are typologically valid and applicable to languages of different types. Articles are grouped in volumes according to the genetic principle or in some cases, the areal principle.
