Twenty-seven Romanian tales of distant kingdoms, unprecedented charms and valiant warriors

Twenty-seven wonderful Romanian fairy tales are included in this edition. They tell about the extraordinary events that happened to strange creatures, about distant kingdoms, about unprecedented charms and about valiant warriors. These tales echo the folklore motifs of different nations, and at the same time there is something special about them that sets these tales apart from others. The collection is decorated with illustrations by two English artists who worked at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries.

Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) was a famous London book illustrator. He was the eldest of four artist brothers, with whom he sometimes worked together: for example, Charles, along with his brother Henry, illustrated some of the works of Jane Austen. Charles received his first order to illustrate a book at the age of twenty and soon became a well-known master in the field of book drawing. He illustrated the works of such authors as Jane Austen, William Thackeray, Jonathan Swift and George Eliot. His drawings of Romanian fairy tales perfectly convey their harmony and lyricism, and the magical creatures are depicted in such detail, as if the artist had once seen them firsthand.

Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941) was a talented master of Victorian fairy tale painting. Ford received his first education at Cambridge College, then he returned to his native London and graduated from the London School of Fine Arts. Without stopping there, Henry continued his studies at the Bushey School of Art. Masterfully mastering the technique of academic drawing, Ford, like a number of other English painters and graphic artists of his time, preferred to move away from academicism, choosing fabulous painting for his creative activity. This trend of British art gained popularity in the second half of the 19th century. It is typical for him to depict all kinds of fantastic creatures, magical plants and folklore plots in a romantic way. There was a growing interest in book illustration in the visual arts of Great Britain at that time: many artists created works based on literary works, and some took up illustrating collections of Shakespeare plays and fairy tales from around the world. Among these artists was Henry Ford. He is known for his works on The Arabian Nights, Rudyard Kipling's History of England, and Andrew Lang's The Olive Book of Fairy Tales. Ford's illustrations of Romanian fairy tales are characterized by fine lines, iridescences of delicate shades and a variety of characters depicted.
