The course of lectures on Russian history by Alexander Alexandrovich Kornilov (1862-1925), an outstanding researcher and prominent public figure, professor of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, covers a truly fateful, dynamic and incredibly important period of Russia's development for understanding today - the era from the reign of Catherine II to the first decades of the XX century.

The XIX century is a special historical period for Russia. It radically differed from the course of development of the Russian statehood of all previous centuries. And the fundamental work of Professor A. A. Kornilov consistently and vividly illuminated all aspects of the life of the Russian Empire in the most brilliant age of its heyday. Kornilov's work is unique both in terms of clarity of form and clarity of presentation, and in terms of scope and richness of factual material. In this respect, Kornilov's work to a certain extent surpasses even the famous lectures of S. M. Solovyov and V. O. Klyuchevsky.
