The serious craft of an honored domestic master of laughter
Laughter is a serious matter. This means that a writer who takes up a funny topic is obliged to approach his work seriously. Otherwise, it will not be funny. Among the domestic masters of laughter, and there are actually a few of them (Chekhov, Zoshchenko, Ilf and Petrov, plus a dozen more names), the name of Arkady Averchenko occupies one of the places of honor. Contemporaries recalled: "Where Averchenko is, there is laughter, roar, fun..." The same can be said about the readers of books that came out from the pen of the writer: where they read Averchenko — there... And then, as in the quote. Because it is really impossible to imagine a person reading Averchenko with a sad, unsmiling face.
