Church separation, Renovationist hierarchs and documents of the Soviet era
"Power and fire. The Church and the Soviet State: 1918 - the beginning of the 1940s" is a new book by the famous historian Sergei Firsov, devoted to the study of various aspects of the relations between the Church and the Soviet government during the tragic period of Russian history.
The first chapter of the book examines the perception by contemporaries of Lenin's decree on the separation of Church and state. Then the author proceeds to the systematic work of the Soviet government to destroy the Church, paying special attention to the renovationist movement.
Biographical sketches dedicated to three prominent representatives of the Renovationist movement - "metropolitans" Alexander Vvedensky, Alexander Boyarsky and Nikolai Platonov, make up a separate section of the book.
Documents published in the Appendix, such as a letter carrier of an unknown author from the circle of "Metropolitan" Alexander Vvedensky and the text "On the Joys of Metropolitan Sergius" attributed to ep. To Andrey (Ukhtomsky), they are of particular interest for characterizing the epoch.
The collection concludes with a historiographical review of the main works and publications devoted to the Soviet period of church history.
