The war through German eyes in private letters and diaries

Nicholas Stargardt is a Mobilized Nation. Germany 1939-1945. A gift book in a leather cover. A mobilized nation. Germany 1939-1945 is a unique study that sheds light on World War II from the point of view of German citizens. The book is based on private letters and diaries from the war, which allows the reader to immerse himself in the atmosphere of that time. In chronological order, from 1939 to 1945, the author describes how the Germans perceived the beginning of the war, their hopes and fears, as well as changes in their thoughts and feelings in moments of victories and defeats. Special attention is paid to repression and brutality in the conquered territories and in Germany itself, as well as to the attitude towards the conquered peoples, Jews and the "final solution of the Jewish question." The author dwells in detail on the complex relationship between the state and the church. A lot of space is devoted to the topic of Nazi propaganda, which was widespread at that time. Details of daily life in Germany at the front and in the rear are also interesting, including shortages of food and manufactured goods, the card system, bombing, evacuation, relationships with foreign workers and the problems of children and adolescents. The author's anti-Nazi position is obvious, and he deliberately avoids assessments, striving to provide an impartial, documented description of events.
