The new expanded edition of the volume "Tatars" in the series "Peoples and Cultures" of the Russian Academy of Sciences is due to the demand for this work in the scientific, pedagogical and public spheres in all regions of the Russian Federation and, above all, in the Republic of Tatarstan. The work was written by leading Russian scientists and represents the most comprehensive summary of historical and ethnographic knowledge about the Tatars, the second largest people in the Russian Federation. The publication is supplemented by new research materials in the field of national history and culture of the Tatars of the Volga-Ural region of the Russian Federation, using comparative materials on Western Siberia, the Lower Volga region and a number of neighboring countries. The volume of sources on ethnic history and historical demography, traditional economy and everyday life, material and spiritual culture, and related disciplines has been significantly updated: anthropology, dialectology, linguistics, and ethnosociology.
