He began dictating his memoirs in 1965, almost immediately after his retirement, and continued working on them until his death in 1971. In the book offered to the reader, the author tells a chronological story about his life, starting with the end of the Civil War (1921) and ending with the XX Congress of the CPSU.

The memoirs were written in conditions of the strongest opposition of the authorities, and therefore the author did not have access to archives and other sources of information. Psychological pressure was exerted on him, he was threatened, but he resisted and continued to work until his last days.
